Dalbeattie Reclaims its Heritage

In the summer of 2026, Dalbeattie begins an exciting new chapter in its history with the launch of its first official Riding of the Marches, a new tradition rooted in the town’s historic burgh heritage.

The tradition of “Riding the Marches” dates back centuries and was once an important duty of Scottish burgh towns. Burgh status gave communities rights of local government and trade, and in 1858 Dalbeattie became a Police Burgh, granting local commissioners responsibility for managing the town and defining its official boundaries.

Historically, these boundaries were marked and inspected on horseback, with officials and townspeople riding the full extent of the burgh limits to ensure they were recognised and respected. Recent historical research uncovered Dalbeattie’s original burgh boundary map, inspiring local organisers to revive this tradition in a modern form.

Building on the success of previous community ride-outs, 2026 marks the year the event is formally established as Dalbeattie Riding of the Marches. The route reflects the story of the Granite Town itself — beginning at Biggars Mill and the Port, passing landmarks connected to the Maxwell family, and travelling through the granite-rich landscape that shaped Dalbeattie’s identity.

As Chairperson Hayley West explains:
“This isn’t just a horse ride; it is a declaration of who we are. We are tracing the footsteps of the quarrymen, the traders, and the families who made Dalbeattie. Whether you are on horseback or cheering from the pavements, you are part of this history.”

While symbolic in modern times, the ride honours the same principle as the historic tradition: recognising the boundaries that helped shape Dalbeattie’s identity and celebrating the heritage shared by its people.

With this revival, Dalbeattie proudly joins other historic towns across southern Scotland — including Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbright, and Dumfries — that continue to maintain their marches traditions today.

The inaugural official Dalbeattie Riding of the Marches will take place on Sunday 9th August 2026 at 2:00pm, departing from Biggars Mill, following Civic Day celebrations on Saturday 8th August.

This event is not only a celebration of Dalbeattie’s past, but the beginning of a lasting new tradition for future generations.

Safe Oot, Safe In.
